What I learned from my dog

Hawk is an incredibly affectionate 18-month-old black lab. His first home was in New Orleans. After Katrina, he was one of many dogs that were brought to the Chicagoland region. He was the last one to be adopted from the shelter.

He takes a while to learn new things. We are still working on “stay.” He is, however, very loving. He will stare for the longest time, just waiting to be acknowledged. When he decides that he wants to be petted, or wants to give a kiss, or just wants attention, he WILL get his way. He is very strong.

Sometimes he gets a little out of control with excitement and a little discipline becomes necessary. To most dogs, a little discipline goes a long way. Not Hawk. Hawk is so determined that typical measures yield nearly no results. And so, we have adjusted to his schedule. At first I was a little annoyed that a pet could rule me in such a manner. I was wrong. It is the price that I must pay. And what a minor one at that. It is the price that I must pay for unconditional love.

No matter how long that I have been gone, that his dinner was delayed, what mood I am in, what day or time it is… he loves me unconditionally. What a thing to learn from a pet!

I was totally impressed by their persistent zeal for affection, no matter how many times it was defeated. :)
