The Vulnerability of Love

Technically someone who is my equal came into my office yesterday. For the past few weeks, he has seemed distracted. He is one of the best managers that we have, but something seemed off. I made use of the opportunity.

I asked how he was doing.
Fine, with a smile.
I asked about the family.
Good, with a sign.
I asked about his son.
You don’t want to know, with a tear.

The tough thing about love is that in order to experience it, we have to make ourselves vulnerable. To be vulnerable to love means that we are vulnerable to pain. How else cold only those we love hurt us to badly?

I think that everyone knows that love will hurt at some point, and yet we all need it, we all crave it. Ultimately, we decide that the joy of love is worth the risk of the pain of disappointment. People make this choice over and over throughout their entire life.

I hope that the pain pays off for him. I hope that he must endure the pain in order to be left with only love.

I like to appreciate God's love by looking at the situation from His perspective. That father's love for his son is nothing compared to God's for us and He goes through so much more pain with so many more people and makes Himself fully vulnerable for us. What an unbelievable concept...an all-powerful being that is complety vulnerable to us.
