Monogrammed

I do not understand the concept behind monogramming one’s clothing. Certain companies advertize monogramming as if it is ultra- stylish. What for?

I work with someone who, in the course of the 6 months that I have known him, has worn a monogrammed shirt EVERY SINGLE DAY! The variation comes with location, font, size and color. But there are ALWAYS 2 initials. WHY?

Is this the adult version of the name pinned to the outside of one’s jacket? I wonder if his address is somehow placed on the inside of his shirt? Is this how he remembers how to sign his name?

I simply do not understand.
