As some may know, my husband and I are trying to get to as many football games as possible this season. Saturday was our third, and most fun, to date.
We drove the 2 hours to Eureka College. Have you ever heard of Eureka? I hadn’t. My mother-in-law had gone to school there and we thought that it would be fun to check it out. For perspective, the student body is comprised of 625 students. They are a Christian College with the mascot of The Red Devil. They have a band, made up of 16 individuals in no particular uniform, 3 of which do not play instruments but are responsible for the “ohs and ahs” during each song. When the football is kicked through the uprights on the north side of the field, the ball hits the road. When the football is kicked in the other direction, the ball enters the backyard of some neighbor. There are no lights, so a night game is not an option. There is no plumbing, but that’s ok because there was never a line for the 2, yes 2, portable toilets.
We arrived to the school and parked across the street from the field. There was a random guy in the lot selling Eureka College items out of a duffle bag. We picked up a few things, told him about our football project and went on our way. He asked if we were reporters… ah, no. We enjoyed the game… even though Eureka lost. Evidently, that is not new. They have not won a game since 2005. The game ended and my hubby needed to use the restroom. I waited nearby. A couple approached and asked, “Are you the traveling fans that we heard about?”
“Heard about? What do you mean?”
“Well, people are talking about how there is a couple that is visiting college football games. We thought that you might be them. Thank you for choosing our school. Thank you for the support.”
“You’re welcome. It was fun.”
“I’m glad. I just wish that we could have given you a win.”
“That’s ok. We enjoyed ourselves. … can’t win them all.”
“Yes, but it would be nice if we won one!”
And then she introduced herself… “By the way, I am the quarterback’s mom.”
“It was nice to meet you. Good luck this year.”
It was great to visit a school that may have just a few fans, but those fans are personally invested in the game. They actually recognize a newcomer to their stadium… or at least to the home side. The excitement is so genuine, the love of the game so pure. This was the best game yet.
