Snow Day!

When I was a child, I would sit near the clock radio in my parents room at the first sign of a snowflake. Was school cancelled? Was it delayed? Or, sadly, did I have school that day? Like most kids, I loved those days... breaks from the normal routine.

When I went to highschool, I pretty much gave up on the idea of a snow day. I was at a boarding school and we lived in dorms on the city-block campus. Oddly enough, we did manage to have a snow day though. Fun and unexpected.

Likewise with college. We had a couple, but they were really rare. Although, in a college setting, I typically thought that attendance was not really required, therefore, snow days didn't impact me as much.

Then I got myself a real-life job, career, responsibilities, etc. Gone was the hope of snow days, of a free day, of optional attendance.

And then yesterday happened. Freezing rain, sleet, snow, wind, etc POUNDED our area. We were literally frozen to the inside of our house. We couldn't get the doors open for about 4 hours. When I finally went outside, the precipitation had frozen itself around my tires. Nothing I could do... so I did nothing. I shoveled the little bit that I could, called work and informed them that I was taking a snow day.

The weird thing about it is that I felt terribly guilty. So much so that I have gone to work on a Saturday... it's probably been 8 years since I have worked on a Saturday. I guess the excitement of a snowday is not nearly as much fun when one gets older. Huh.

What a fond memory the start of your story brought back. How 4 of the 5 of us would be in mom and dad's bed each morning while one of the family members was in the bathroom getting ready. Thank God we only had one full bathroom.
