Merry CHRISTmas

December 29th... Looking back on the past few days, what sticks out in your mind? Family, friends, songs, worship, food, laughter, old stories, new memories, gifts, smiles, hugs?

For me, a lot of these apply. I often refer to the lesson that I learned during some interaction. This Christmas was no exception.

Christmas Eve: My husband and I were in church for the 11pm service. (I especially enjoy "Silent Night" during this extremely late service.) The sermon was about gifts and how Jesus is our gift from God. Jesus's gift to us is his death. How beautiful is it that our eternal life comes out of Jesus's gift of death?! I enjoyed the sermon. I appreciated the perspective.

Little did I realize at that time how much I would appreciate those words.

One of my former bosses, and now friend, of mine lost his wife to cancer during the very early hours of Christmas Day. She left behind her husband of 18 years, twin 8 year old girls and a 12 year old boy.

While there are a lot of ways to look at this situation, I couldn't help but flash back to the sermon that I had heard just a few hours prior. Life through death. Martha Canfield had strong Christian beliefs. I find some beauty in the concept that she was given the gift of eternal life on Christmas.

I'm not sure how to articulate it, but I am certain that there is a lesson in that.
