September 11, 2007

Where were you 6 years ago? What were you doing? Who were you with? How did you day change between the time that you woke up and the time that you fell asleep? How did you feel?

A lot of time has passed since the day that we, as a country, realized that we are not invincible. And in some ways, not enough time.

Remember the new flags as they were hung in a show of support and patriotism? They were everywhere! Where are they now? So much time has passed… the flags get old, we take them down. We become comfortable in our lives again. Maybe that’s ok… maybe it’s good to resume “life as normal” to show that life goes on… maybe not. I don’t know.

We are fortunate enough to live in a country in which we can express ourselves. Sometimes we take our freedoms for granted… I know I did, and do. One thing that I learned on September 11, 2001 was how much I love this country. I was reminded of my passion today when I watched David Letterman’s first comments after the attack.

Maybe it is good that life resumes to “normal” and as such we don’t loose the battle for freedom. I also think it is good to reflect on where we have been… so that we don’t have to go there again.

I was never more proud to be an American than the weeks following that day. I drove across the state a couple times and everyone was waving flags, waving to each other, etc. It was like for the first time in my life the United States was one...I wish we could be more like that without such tragedies.
